The detail

Three differences that decide it.

1 · Neutral plumbing versus sovereignty enforced in code

n8n's self-hosting is genuinely best-in-class. You can run the Community edition for free on your own infrastructure, it is source-available under the Sustainable Use License, which is a fair-code licence rather than OSI open source, and a large community keeps shipping nodes and templates. What self-hosting does not decide is where a running workflow sends data. n8n is neutral plumbing: each node connects to whatever endpoint it is configured to reach, so a workflow can call a cloud model or an external service simply because someone wired it that way.

AANCER enforces the data boundary in the runtime rather than in the diagram. Workspaces classified as sovereign are held to a fail-closed policy engine. A request that would send protected data to a cloud model returns 403 SOVEREIGNTY_BLOCK before it leaves your network, and the refusal is written to the audit ledger. Local models are the default for sovereign work, and cloud models run only where policy allows them.

2 · An AI-agent node versus certified, revocable agents

n8n does have AI agents. Its agent node is built on LangChain, and n8n runs local models natively through Ollama and its Self-Hosted AI Starter Kit, which is a real strength. What that node does not carry is a governed identity. There is no signed credential, no certification, and no documented way to revoke one agent's authority once it is running. In AANCER, every agent operates under a signed, revocable passport that fixes which tools it may call, the budget it may spend, and the workspace it may act in. Revoke the passport and the agent stops acting within ≤30 seconds, and every run and every denial is written to an append-only, hash-chained, tamper-evident audit ledger whose controls are mapped to 27 regulations across the EU, MENA, and APAC.

n8n's agent node runs the model. AANCER's passport decides what the agent is allowed to do, and lets you take that permission back in ≤30 seconds.

3 · Governance in the free edition versus governance behind a paywall

n8n gives you a great deal for nothing, and it is ahead of AANCER on one point worth stating plainly: it holds a SOC 2 program and a SOC 3 report today, while AANCER's ISO 27001 work is still in progress. The two diverge once governance becomes a requirement. In n8n, single sign-on starts at the Business tier, and audit logs and log streaming are Enterprise-only, so the controls a regulated buyer needs sit behind the paid tiers. In AANCER, sovereignty enforcement, certified agents, approvals, and the hash-chained audit ledger are present from the free EVAL edition, because they are the reason the platform exists rather than an upsell. If workflow automation is all you need, n8n is leaner and cheaper, and its free self-hosted core is hard to argue with. If those workflows have to run under enforced sovereignty and produce audit evidence, that is the job AANCER is built for.
